Lol, jk. Making a post abut this because an acquaintance just asked me about Homestuck and I can’t fit regular conversations into one ask so I knew there was no way I’d be able to explain Homestuck in such little space.
Going to start with the simpler question about how long it would take you to catch up with it. The short answer is quite a while, Homestuck is hella long and looking at the archive is understandably intimidating, however it does read quicker than you might expect so it ultimately depends on how quickly you read and how much free time you have. I started reading in November 2010 and it took me about a month to catch up, though obviously a lot more has been added since then.
As for what it’s about, well that’s a bit trickier to explain, but I will try. Okay, never mind I tried and I don’t think there’s a way to sum it up that will give you a clear idea of whether you’ll like it or not. The only things I think you really need to know about Homestuck beforehand are:
1) Read everything! If the sheer bulk of it starts get to you take a break and come back later, because trust me when I say that no matter how trivial something may seem at first it WILL be important later.
2) It’s not for everyone. Homestuck is consistently humorous even when absolutely horrifying things are happening, but that humor doesn’t gel with everybody. You’ll hear a lot of people in the fandom say “trust me, it gets better” when they’re trying to convince someone to give it a try but I’m honestly not so sure about that. I mean yeah, there are plenty of fans who grew to like it over time, but I don’t know that it would be true for everyone because even though things do change a lot over the course of the story, it keeps that same style, that same mindset, that same again humor throughout.
In a lot of ways I see Homestuck as very reflective of the Internet generation, but in a way that’s a bit more subtle than you’re used to seeing from the Internet. (By which I mean that it isn’t just a bunch of cats, guy fawkes masks and shouting) And if you’re part of the Internet generation there’s a good chance you’ll be able to enjoy it. So give it a shot!
